Farmrise stands out from other agricultural apps by addressing the historic obstacle of isolation faced by Indian farmers. For the first time, they have access to educational and scientific information that can significantly improve their decision-making process. The application successfully binds the fragmented ecosystem by providing a one-stop solution for farmers, connecting them to essential resources and services.
One of the key strengths of Farmrise is its ability to run smoothly on low-speed 2G/3G networks. By utilizing Google fonts and implementing intelligent caching, the app ensures that farmers can access information even in areas with limited connectivity. Additionally, the app utilizes lifelike illustrations to enhance user experience without increasing the size of the app, making it familiar and user-friendly.
The realization of Farmrise posed significant challenges for the design team. The app had to overcome various technological limitations while meeting the high visual demands of its users. Extensive research, including questionnaires, focused group discussions, and observation techniques, was conducted to understand the needs and preferences of farmers. Wireframes were created using Sketch, and lifelike illustrations were developed to meet the visual demands while maintaining optimal asset size. Tools such as Illustrator, Photoshop, and InVision were utilized for visual design and prototyping.
Farmrise was designed specifically for Android devices, with a focus on providing a simple and intuitive user experience. The app employs the existing technological behavior of the target audience and utilizes tap functionality, which farmers are already familiar with. The bottom navigation features main app functions such as learning, crop prices, community, and events. Every action taken by the user sends updates to keep them informed. The app also includes preloaded Google fonts for easy language localization and caches information to ensure it can be accessed even in areas with no connectivity.
The Farmrise project began in June 2017 and was completed in March 2018 in India. Extensive ethnographic research was conducted, involving interactions with over 150 farmers across India over a period of three months. This research provided valuable insights into the day-to-day activities, processes, crop cycles, and decision-making factors of farmers. The app was designed to address the real pain points and challenges faced by farmers, with a focus on creating an ecosystem-centric solution that considers the influencers in their immediate environment.
The Farmrise app has revolutionized the way Indian farmers access information and make decisions. With over 70% of farmers now owning mobile phones, they can easily access personalized and accurate agronomy advisory through the app. Farmrise serves as a one-stop solution, providing solutions to everyday farming challenges and connecting farmers with the influencers in their ecosystem. This unique approach has garnered recognition, with Farmrise receiving the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Mobile Technologies, Applications, and Software Design category in 2019.
Farmrise is not just a mobile application; it is a game-changer for Indian farmers, empowering them with knowledge and resources to improve their livelihoods. By bridging the gap between technology and agriculture, Farmrise is paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future for Indian farmers.
